College Republicans host sixth annual Animal Rights BBQ
MILWAUKEE, WI – On Tuesday afternoon the MUCRs held their annual Animal Rights BBQ. Free grilled chicken sandwiches and chips were passed out under the Raynor Library Bridge. The barbeque is one of the most popular and well recognized College Republican events on campus.
Last year grilled pork sandwiches were handed out and a man dressed in a giant pig costume walked around and took pictures with Marquette students. This year the meat of choice was grilled chicken, complemented by a giant chicken mascot shaking hands and posing in pictures with students.
The original idea came from former College Republican Chairman Brandon Henak back in 2002. Since then the Animal Rights BBQ has become a staple event of the College Republicans. College Republican Vice Chairman Luke Fuller said, “The Animal Rights BBQ allows us to recruit new members and show them that MUCRs are not just about campaigning, but we’re about having fun too.”
Justin Phillips, who dressed up in the chicken costume, said, “I enjoy being able to let go and have a good time with students.” He also added, “Getting high fives from excited students is probably the best part of being the chicken.” Phillips interacted with students, took pictures, and made his way around the quad as students passed by on their way to class.
The MUCRs will continue to host their annual barbeque in hopes of gaining new membership and showing Marquette students the lighter side of their group.
